first model on Sketchfab!

the slider control can now be viewed on sketchfab!

I am finalising all the models and then I will start working on the C#  scripts for Unity.

I Imagine this controller as a sort of gas pedal. The red handle is pushed or pulled to adjust the amount of thrust going to engines.

the script for this control will output a value from 0 to 1 depending on the handles position along the orange indicator.

The red wrapping indicates the grabbable and movable part of the control. the orange chequered pattern roughly indicates the output value.

How to get blessed by the blender gods

If you are some Blender God capable of 3D modelling without a reference, pulling clean topology out of thin air, then stop reading, please bless me and just ignore the rest of this blogpost. if you’re a mere mortal like me though, and start modelling without a roadmap, you’re bound to get lost in a mess of vertices and faces, unsure of where you were trying to go in the first place. So how do you avoid this confusion? It all starts with a good reference. I like to make a detailed sketch. For me drawing and painting is an organic and pleasant process. 3D modelling, though rewarding in its own way, is highly technical and can be extremely frustrating at times. That’s why I find it very helpful to have a nice clean sketch to work from when modelling. You could even plan your topology in 2D! Simply draw the vertices over the sketch you’ve got, like I have done in the image below. This has really helped me a lot and has made modelling a breeze. Unfortunately, things still don’t always...

Cockpit Project

For this project I will be creating a set of 5 spaceship cockpit controls for use in a VR Game. Including C# scripts to handle all functionality designed for Unity. The final product should be something you can just drop in a Unity game set up for VR and play with right off the bat. Visually I want to go for a stylized look, drawing from “Sea of Thieves”, the Arcane animations and studio Ghibli. They should have PBR textures that react nicely to lighting. All the while keeping performance in mind as it is meant for VR. The code should be such that you can easily add different visuals and cover a range of interaction types. This will allow it to have use beyond just this one spaceship cockpit implementation. These controls should be interactable in an intuitive way. You should feel like you’re grabbing and moving something. I take great inspiration from the “Sea of Thieves” way of controlling your ship. To move forward you must go and lower a sail and pivot it to catch the wind, r...
