The final product should be something you can just drop in a Unity game set up for VR and play with right off the bat.
Visually I want to go for a stylized look, drawing from “Sea of Thieves”, the Arcane animations and studio Ghibli. They should have PBR textures that react nicely to lighting. All the while keeping performance in mind as it is meant for VR.
The code should be such that you can easily add different visuals and cover a range of interaction types. This will allow it to have use beyond just this one spaceship cockpit implementation. These controls should be interactable in an intuitive way. You should feel like you’re grabbing and moving something. I take great inspiration from the “Sea of Thieves” way of controlling your ship. To move forward you must go and lower a sail and pivot it to catch the wind, rather than “pressing w to move forward”. I would like these controls to play a similar role. You grab and manipulate a slider to power your engines up or down. Rather than “pressing x to increase thrust”.
In This blog I hope to share what I learn along the way, showcase results and finally write up a little guide on how to implement the final product.
