If you are some Blender God capable of 3D modelling without
a reference, pulling clean topology out of thin air, then stop reading, please
bless me and just ignore the rest of this blogpost.
if you’re a mere mortal like me though, and start modelling
without a roadmap, you’re bound to get lost in a mess of vertices and faces,
unsure of where you were trying to go in the first place. So how do you avoid
this confusion?
It all starts with a good reference. I like to make a
detailed sketch. For me drawing and painting is an organic and pleasant process.
3D modelling, though rewarding in its own way, is highly technical and can be
extremely frustrating at times. That’s why I find it very helpful to have a
nice clean sketch to work from when modelling.
You could even plan your topology in 2D! Simply draw the
vertices over the sketch you’ve got, like I have done in the image below. This
has really helped me a lot and has made modelling a breeze.
Unfortunately, things still don’t always go smoothly. But that’s okay! Planning will not make everything work out right away. Iteration is always a part of making something good. But a good plan will speed up the process, saving you time and peace of mind.
